Why some Shopify apps bill you in months you don't use them

A recurring Shopify app plan charges for its billing period, not each login. Learn why charges can appear later and what uninstalling changes.

Pricing & Billing

Part of: Docket pricing

A Shopify app can bill you in a month you never open it because a recurring plan charges for the subscription period, not each use. Shopify-billed apps run on their own 30-day cycles. Uninstalling stops future cycles, but a charge generated before uninstall can still appear on the next Shopify bill.

Does a recurring app charge depend on use?

No. A fixed recurring plan bills for continued access during the subscription period. It does not wait for a login, a printed document, or another action inside the app.

Shopify separates recurring pricing plans from usage pricing plans. A recurring plan has a fixed charge every 30 days. A usage plan varies with the events or units the developer records during its cycle.

That distinction explains a quiet-month charge. If the subscription stayed active, the fixed plan renewed even when you did not open the app. The app may also have kept doing background work, but the fixed charge does not depend on proving that work occurred.

Why can the charge appear on a later Shopify bill?

The app’s billing cycle and the store’s Shopify billing cycle can begin on different dates. Shopify adds the app charge to the next 30-day store bill, or to an earlier bill if the store crosses its billing threshold.

For example, an app cycle may begin on September 10 while the store bill is issued on September 21. The September 21 bill can contain the app period that started eleven days earlier. The invoice date does not mean the app first charged you on that date.

This is why a charge can look late. Check the app cycle start, the store invoice date, and whether the charge is pending or paid before you decide that two charges cover the same period.

Does uninstalling remove a pending charge?

No. Uninstalling a Shopify-billed app stops future billing cycles. It does not remove a charge that the app already generated at the start of the current cycle.

Shopify says a pending charge can still appear on the next invoice after uninstall. If the charge has not been paid, contact the app developer to request a credit. If Shopify has collected it, the developer can decide whether to issue a refund. Shopify does not promise that the developer will approve either request.

Canceling inside an app is not always enough. Shopify says you must also uninstall the app from Settings > Apps to stop Shopify billing. If the developer bills you outside Shopify, cancel that external subscription with the developer as well.

How can you check the next app charge?

Open Settings > Apps in Shopify admin, choose the app, and review Billing and usage charges. Shopify shows the plan, subscription status, recurring amount, billing frequency, usage charges when they exist, and the next bill date.

Then open Settings > Billing. View current charges for pending items and Past bills for collected charges. Keep the app name, amount, invoice number, install date, uninstall date, and billing-cycle start when you contact the developer.

These dates answer two different questions. The app page says what period the subscription covers. The bill says when Shopify invoiced or collected it.

How does Docket bill for a quiet month?

Docket is a fixed recurring subscription. Unlimited costs $9.99 USD monthly or $99.99 USD annually after a 14-day trial. It has no order-count, document-count, or usage charge. A quiet month does not reduce the fixed subscription, and a busy month does not raise it.

If Docket billing ends while the app remains installed, new document writes and full app access stop. Saved records and public links remain available. Uninstalling is different because it deletes the Docket archive and ends those links. The billing documentation explains both states.

If you want a document app bill that stays fixed as order and document volume changes, read the Docket pricing page. If you only need occasional manual printing, a free print-on-demand app may be the better answer.
